I’m curious why so many groups are fighting to save a building that represents the violent death of innocent animals – the Birely Tannery in Frederick. The demolition of the tannery is one of the final obstacles in the construction of a new hotel/conference center in downtown Frederick.
Protesting for the sake of it?
As usual, you have the same cast of “Profesters”, i.e. Professional Protesters, descending in kill mode on a project that will benefit the Frederick community in many ways including additional business downtown and increased tax revenue.
Fools truly do rush in.
The irony of this “profest”, however, is that those against the demolition are, in essence, siding with the preservation of a building that was dedicated to the destruction of innocent animals. While they wanted every trace of Taney and other symbols of past wrongdoing erased from our community, they have embraced a facility that was dedicated to killing animals. Are they really that cruel? Is there not a pet owner in the opposing group that is ashamed?

The tannery industry has a long history of exploiting and killing animals using inhumane methods. Per PETA, there are “14 Things the Leather Industry Doesn’t Want you to Know“. The graphic violence of that industry is depicted in this video.
I’m hopeful that the HPC and/or the commissioners come to there senses and rid our landscape of this awful reminder of our past. There is no glory in saving a facility that would gladly turn your dog or cat into a leather shoe.
